On Collisionless Electron-Ion Temperature Equilibration in the Fast Solar Wind

چکیده

We explore a mechanism, entirely new to the fast solar wind, of electron heating by lower hybrid waves to explain the shift to higher charge states observed in various elements in the fast wind at 1 A.U. relative to the original coronal hole plasma. This process is a variation on that previously discussed for two temperature accretion flows by Begelman & Chiueh. Lower hybrid waves are generated by gyrating minor ions (mainly α-particles) and become significant once strong ion cyclotron heating sets in beyond 1.5R . In this way the model avoids conflict with SUMER electron temperature diagnostic measurements between 1 and 1.5R . The principal requirement for such a process to work is the existence of density gradients in the fast solar wind, with scale length of similar order to the proton inertial length. Similar size structures have previously been inferred by other authors from radio scintillation observations and considerations of ion cyclotron wave generation by global resonant MHD waves.

Solar wind ionic charge states during the Ulysses pole - to - pole pass

We analyze and compare the ionic charge composition data for different types of the solar wind (slow wind from equatorial regions, fast wind from low-latitude coronal hole and fast wind from both south and north polar coronal hole) which the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer (SWICS) on Ulysses observed during the pole-to-pole pass of its primary mission. The implications on the electron t...

The effect of a current free double layer below the photosphere on the acceleration of the solar wind Running head: A sub-photospheric CFDL and the acceleration of the solar wind

Neither the collisional hydrodynamic nor the collisionless kinetic models have yet been able to fully explain the acceleration of the fast solar wind without ad hoc assumptions of additional energy input or suprathermal electron populations at the base of the models in the lower corona. Separate research has shown that plasma naturally forms a Current Free Double Layer when expanding into a low...

Direct evidence for kinetic effects associated with solar wind reconnection

Kinetic effects resulting from the two-fluid physics play a crucial role in the fast collisionless reconnection, which is a process to explosively release massive energy stored in magnetic fields in space and astrophysical plasmas. In-situ observations in the Earth's magnetosphere provide solid consistence with theoretical models on the point that kinetic effects are required in the collisionle...

Balmer-Dominated Shocks: A Concise Review

A concise and critical review of Balmer-dominated shocks (BDSs) is presented, summarizing the state of theory and observations, including models with/without shock precursors and their synergy with atomic physics. Observations of BDSs in supernova remnants are reviewed on an object-by-object basis. The relevance of BDSs towards understanding the acceleration of cosmic rays in shocks is emphasiz...

On the Electron Temperature and Coronal Heating in the Fast Solar Wind Constrained by In-situ Observations

The electron temperature profile in the polar coronal hole inferred by the ionic charge state data of the fast wind exhibits a local maximum of 1:5 10 K. This indicates the existence of electron heating in the source region of the fast solar wind. In this paper, a two-fluid solar wind model, which incorporates additional ‘mechanical’ heating, is used to investigate the heating of the electrons ...
